Giant Food kicks off annual Hunger Action Month

September 6, 2013

Giant Food of Landover, Md., announced several initiatives across Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Washington, D.C. to fight hunger during September, Hunger Action Month. The monthlong campaign will include several activities, including the introduction of two new programs: Hunger Action Month Boxes and the launch of the Meat Donation Program.

Hunger Action Month Boxes are available for purchase in all 169 neighborhood Giant locations for $10. Each box contains eight Giant brand nonperishable food items including pasta, sauce, canned chicken, noodles, canned fruit and more. All Hunger Action Month Boxes will be donated to Feeding America food bank partners including the Capital Area Food Bank, Maryland Food Bank, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, Fredericksburg Area Food Bank, and Food Bank of Delaware.

This month, Giant will launch a region-wide Meat Donation Program, also benefiting its Feeding America food bank partners. After an extensive test phase with the Maryland Food Bank, all neighborhood stores will participate and abide by stringent standard operating procedures. Packaged meat that has not been purchased by the posted sell-by-date will be immediately frozen and stored for biweekly pickup by food bank partners.

“Hunger Action Month is a very meaningful time for Giant associates. The depth of our relationships with our food bank partners - relationships that in many cases are decades strong - is a testament to our commitment in helping relieve some of the strain many in our community have putting food on the table,” said Anthony Hucker, president, Giant Food of Landover, Md.
