Cape soccer defeats Tower Hill 2-1 on Swarbrick goal

The Cape Henlopen soccer team kicked off the season Saturday afternoon by beating Tower Hill at Dover High by a score of 2-1. Cape outshot the Hillers 18-8 as goalie Griffin Kammerer recorded five saves.

Cape unleashed relentless pressure in the first half, and when Billy Swontek sent a ball through to an on-sides Max Euler, the speedy forward did not miss, ringing the bell at the 10:37 mark.

Tower responded by converting a penalty kick off the foot of Steven Siegfried at 18:08 as Kammerer guessed right and the ball was blasted to his left for a goal.

Cape’s winning goal came with less than two minutes remaining in the first half as Kai Vitella sent a pass through traffic to Zach Swarbrick, who one-timed it home for what proved to be all Cape needed for the victory.

Cape will host Tatnall at Legends Stadium Tuesday, Sept. 10, then travel to Milford to play the Bucs at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 12.

Tatnall lost to St. Georges in its season-opening game 2-0. The Hornets were 8-6-1 last season against a tough schedule

Notes: Following the Cape game In a rematch of last year’s state championship game, Salesianum beat Indian River in overtime 1-0 on a goal by Liam Hill off an assist from Ben Yount at 86 minutes into the match. Sallies outshot the Indians 14-2. Ian Walls recorded eight saves for Indian River. The state tournament will be set up in two divisions this year with Indian River in Division II. Eight teams from each division will make the postseason.
