Over 1,800 Bike MS cyclists expected to finish at Delaware Seashore State Park

Tower ocean parking lot closed to public Sept. 21 and 22

More than 1,800 cyclists will pedal their way from Dover to Dewey Beach Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21 and 22, during Bike MS: Bike to the Bay.

This year’s finish line will return to Delaware Seashore State Park, just south of Dewey Beach. The finish line and related activities will require the full use of the Tower Road ocean parking lot, which will be closed to the general public.

Beachgoers should consider an alternate location such as South Inlet Day Area, just south of the Indian River Inlet bridge, or Fenwick Island State Park, which is  far enough south to miss the event congestion.

Drivers should use caution when driving on Route 1 and surrounding areas. For more information, call 302-655-5610 or visit www.BikeToTheBay.org.

Bike MS: Bike to the Bay comprises six rides. The 17-mile ride begins in Milton. The 45-mile ride begins at Lake Forest High School in Felton, and the 75/100 mile rides begin at the Terry Campus of Delaware Technical Community College in Dover.

The 150-mile ride also begins at Del Tech Saturday, Sept. 21, and cyclists retrace the route back to Dover Sunday, Sept. 22. Avid cyclists have the option to tackle the 175-mile route as well.

Whether riding as an individual or on a team, each cyclist receives a lot of support for fundraising efforts from the Delaware Chapter. Cyclists must raise a minimum $300 to participate in the ride, but the Delaware Chapter is here to help. Contact Taylor DeMario at taylor.demario@nmss.org or call 302-655-5610 for fundraising assistance. The goal is to raise $1 million for MS research as well as the programs and services needed by the more than 1,550 Delawareans with multiple sclerosis.

More than 200 Delaware Chapter volunteers work tirelessly over the two-day weekend to maintain a safe and enjoyable route for all the cyclists. These volunteers also set up and man rest stops every 8 to 12 miles along the route. Each rest stop is well stocked with beverages, fruit and high-energy snacks. Professional bike mechanics and support-and-gear wagons constantly patrol the route for cyclists in need. If necessary, the cyclist and his or her gear are transported to the end of the ride. Overnight accommodations in local hotels are also available.
