Special Olympics athletes gather for Family Day at the Beach

September 29, 2013

Delaware Special Olympic athletes and their families gathered Sept. 14 at Cape Henlopen State Park for the 22nd annual Special Olympics Delaware Families Day at the Beach.

Athletes and their families participated in the annual Hoss Cochran fishing tournament, which is sponsored by the Delaware Mobile Surf Fishermen Association and Lighthouse View Bait and Tackle with volunteers provided by the Rehoboth Beach Lions Club. Prizes were awarded for the first, biggest and most fish caught.

Following the tournament, a picnic lunch was provided by the Rehoboth Beach Kiwanis Club, with support from the Rising Sun Masonic Lodge #4.

“The day is a wonderful way for our athletes and their families to get together and enjoy each other’s company,” said Brenda Zullo, director of athlete development for Special Olympics Delaware. “This year marks our 22nd event, and each year the fishing tournament stories get better and better, and the fish caught bigger and bigger.”
