Post 28 holds 9/11 ceremony

Post 28 Commander Chuck Nimmerichter presents Hugh Thornton with a certificate of commendation in honor of his dog Sam, a hero from the World Trade Center on 9/11. Thornton was a building inspector for the City of New York and was at the site of the fallen Trade Center buildings. A collapse trapped Thornton and a search dog, Sam, found Thornton and stayed by his side until Thornton was extracted. After the event Thornton visited Sam at the firehouse to give his thanks. Sam had reached retirement and the firefighters wanted to give Sam to Thornton. Sam passed this last year. Thornton said, “Sam got the good sendoff, the way he should have gotten.” BY STEVEN BILLUPS
American Legion Post 28 in Oak Orchard held a 9/11 candlelight ceremony in remembrance of the fallen. The ceremony also honored Post 28 members passing in recent years.
Speakers at the event related stories of where they where they heard the news on Sept. 11, 2001, honoring the many ordinary people who did extraordinary things during the tragedy.
