Read a Movie series to screen 'The Canterville Ghost' Oct. 9

September 20, 2013

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and Rehoboth Beach Public Library invite film and/or literary enthusiasts to a special screening of “The Canterville Ghost,” at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the upstairs community room at the library.

This film is an adaption of the famous Oscar Wilde tale about a young American girl who helps a British ghost find rest and forgiveness. The screening is part of the monthly Read a Movie series in which audience members are invited to read a short story in advance of the screening, and then gather to watch the film version and engage in lively discussion about how the film compares to the original story.

When Professor Hiram Otis gets a research grant to study in England, his family is thrilled to learn that they will live in a real castle called Canterville Hall. The castle's most notable feature turns out of be the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville, who has been roaming the place for 400 years. The ghost of Sir Simon is visible only to Virginia Otis (Neve Campbell), 16, and her two younger brothers. Virginia - “Ginny” - campaigns to go back home, and her dad, believing the ghost's pranks are Ginny's, is ready to send her back.

But then Ginny actually meets the elusive 17th-century Sir Simon de Canterville and soon realizes that he is just an old ghost looking for rest and forgiveness. With a change of heart, Ginny becomes determined to free Sir Simon from his curse.

The popular Read a Movie series takes place on the second Wednesday of each month, September to May. Read a Movie is free and open to the public. To sign up and receive the stories in advance, email Jamie Rousak, education/outreach coordinator at outreach@rehobothfilm.com or call the Rehoboth Beach Public Library at 302-227-8044.

The mission of the Rehoboth Beach Film Society is to promote the art of film and, through outreach initiatives, to entertain, educate, and enrich the cultural life of local and extended communities.  The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is funded, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
