The crowds are gone, but the fun continues

September and October are two of the best-kept secrets here at the beach. The crowds are gone, and you can finally bank the 37 pounds of quarters hidden in your car. It’s time to come out of hiding! If you love Rehoboth beach-eats past, don’t miss the upcoming panel discussion, Rehoboth Beach Eateries Past & Present.

Nancy Alexander and Barb Smith of the Rehoboth Beach Museum have assembled an impressive group of pioneers who will share their stories Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m. at the Rehoboth Beach Library. The free-wheeling forum will be moderated by none other than yours truly. In spite of that, I urge you to mark your calendars for the event!

Included among the luminaries are Emmaline Ewing of the Surfside Grill (remember her famous fried mushrooms?), Sue Krick, the second of the three Summer House owners; Nancy (Wolfe) Wayson, proprietor of the legendary Chez la Mer; Keith Fitzgerald, co-owner of Back Porch Café (39 seasons and counting!); Sydney Arzt (how can we forget Sydney’s Blues & Jazz Restaurant?); Tom Wayson, food and beverage boss at Chez la Mer; and Terry Plowman, former Front Page proprietor-turned-magazine publisher. There will be way too much reminiscing to not dedicate the evening to the memory of the late Leo Medisch, co-owner and executive chef of Back Porch Café. Fans of Hari Cameron know that the James Beard nominee is never without something clever up his sleeve. A few weeks ago it was his one-man watermelon eating contest. (See the hilarious film at Hari Cameron’s Facebook page. Warning: Not for the squeamish!) Before that it was the Salvador Dali food-centric art event. In fact, the decidedly unique pieces - also not for the squeamish - are still on exhibit at a(MUSE.).

This Sunday Hari’s hosting The Big Switcheroo! We all know that he’s an inveterate forager and lover of all things that grow, graze or fly nearby. Those who share his love of fresh goodies enjoy pickling vegetables and putting up jams and jellies filled with their bounty of local harvests. But sometimes that bounty can be a little too much, and people find themselves constructing an addition just to hold all those Ball jars.

So this Sunday, Sept. 22 from 3 to 5 p.m., bring your surplus stuff to a(MUSE.) and trade it for other people’s surplus stuff. It promises to be lots of fun, and you’re sure to pick up all sorts of ideas for next year’s crops.

Speaking of fun, where else can you dine on entrees from Blue Moon, Nage and a(MUSE.), then top it off with desserts from Touch of Italy, The Point, Frank & Louie’s, Root Gourmet, Edie Bee’s and Cake Break - and dress up in costume? Why, the Rehoboth Art League’s Beaux Arts Ball, of course. The last ball was 19 years ago, so there will be a lot of catching up to do, much of it courtesy of Dogfish Head’s signature cocktails, to be sure. The event is this Saturday, Sept. 21, so hurry to for tickets and more information.

For so many reasons, shoulder season events seem to be the most fun. The Jazz Festival, Sea Witch Festival and the Film Festival are coming soon, so get out there, leave those quarters at home and remind yourself why you live at the beach.
