Three more Sussex Heritage Bus Tours available this year

Experience the fascinating stories of southern Delaware firsthand on three guided bus tours this fall. Get up close and personal with southern Delaware’s rich agricultural heritage and active harvest season Saturday, Sept. 28. Stops include picking apples at T.S. Smith and Sons in Bridgeville, and visiting you-pick vegetable farms and Hopkins Dairy Farm and Creamery among other agritourism highlights throughout Sussex County. This tour is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Learn about southern Delaware’s struggle with the issues of slavery, freedom and the divisive years of the Civil War Saturday, Oct. 12. Stops include the Confederate Memorial in Georgetown, Gov. Ross Mansion and slave quarters in Seaford and the Middle Point Mason-Dixon Monument in Delmar. This tour is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Southern Delaware’s haunted sites, spirits and urban legends are highlighted during the Saturday, Oct. 19 tour. Stops on the Haunted Southern Delaware Tour include the Cannonball House in Lewes, haunted hotels, the Screams at the Beach attraction in Georgetown and the Unknown Sailors Graveyard at the Lewes Ferry Terminal. This tour is scheduled from 4 to 10:30 p.m.

All three bus tours begin and end at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal in Lewes. Tickets for each tour are $40, and one meal is included. Tickets need to be purchased in advance by calling the Lewes Historical Society at 302-645-7670, Ext. 10. Limited spaces are available for each tour on a first-call, first-served basis.

The bus tours are part of a 2013 series showcasing the natural and cultural heritage of southern Delaware. The bus tours are sponsored and supported by Southern Delaware Tourism, the Lewes Historical Society, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry and the University of Delaware Sustainable Coastal Communities Initiative.
