Eagles fall to Chiefs in Reid's return to Philly

September 23, 2013

It was a sweet homecoming for former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid, as his new squad, the Kansas City Chiefs, handled the Birds 26-16 in front of a national audience on Thursday Night Football at Lincoln Financial Field.

"Fourteen years is 14 years. That’s a long time, especially for a chubby, old guy," said Reid after the game. "I enjoyed every minute here; I’m enjoying my time in Kansas City. Coming back, I really didn’t’ think much about it until the game was over. It was great to see the guys, the players that are here, and I had a chance to talk to a couple of them after the game so I don’t know…it’s all kind of settling in right now, not sure exactly how I feel other than I’m glad we won the game.”

The Eagles spotted the Chiefs 10 points when Damarius Johnson muffed a punt return deep in Philly's zone that led to a chip-shot field goal, and quarterback Michael Vick tossed a pick six to Chiefs safety Eric Berry for a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown.

In total, the Eagles turned the ball over four times in the first half, but only trailed 16-6 at the half.

The Eagles clawed back to within seven points early in the fourth quarter when running back LeSean McCoy scampered for a 41-yard touchdown. The Eagles would get no closer, though, as the Chiefs defense kept the offense at bay and added a late field goal to secure the 10-point victory.

"We’re still that dominant offense; we’re still that dominant team," said McCoy. "It is just a matter of us going back to the basics, heading back to the drawing board and after each game getting better and better."

The game was also a homecoming for former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, who was honored in a retirement ceremony at halftime. His No. 5 jersey was retired and now hangs in the rafters at the Linc.

The Eagles are back in action Sunday, when they travel to the Mile High City to take on Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.
