The Delaware Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the oldest and most experienced animal welfare organization in the state, will host an afternoon of doggone good fun for individuals, families and canines at the 3rd Annual Bark on the Boards fundraising walk Saturday, Oct. 5.
The event, which attracted more than 250 walkers with their pets last year, is sponsored by Browseabout Books. The afternoon includes dog contests - including a bikini contest - a disc dog demonstration, refreshments, kids’ activities, and more. “In just three short years, this event has become highly anticipated by walkers and spectators alike,” said Al Mollica, executive director of the Delaware SPCA.
“All the money raised funds our work with and care of abused, neglected and homeless animals, and our efforts to reduce pet overpopulation through spay/neuter programs. It’s a wonderful afternoon, and we encourage the community to turn out.” The walk coincides with the first weekend of the off-season, when leashed pets can be walked on the Boardwalk and beach without restrictions.
Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. in Lake Gerar Park. The walk starts at noon at the north end of the Boardwalk. Advance registration is $20 for adults before Oct. 3 and $25 the day of the event. Children ages 6-16, accompanied by an adult, pay $5; those 5 and under attend free. Walkers can preregister online at www.delspca.org.
The first 200 registrants will receive a free dog bandana and all walkers can compete for fundraising prizes.
This year Bark on the Boards is part of a schedule of Delaware SPCA’s 140th anniversary events that will culminate with the Canines on the Catwalk 140th Gala to be held at Greenville Country Club Saturday, Nov. 16. The gala will include a night of tasteful delights, entertainment, live and silent auctions, and a runway event featuring some very cool cats and haute designer dogs.
