Nassau Valley Vineyards will host the artwork of Lewes painter Fred Beaufait in its gallery space through the end of October. A free Meet the Artist reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 27. The public is welcome to enjoy light refreshments and view the show.

Beaufait, a resident of Lewes since late 2004, currently serves on Lewes City Council. He has had a 46-year career in higher education. He holds a BS degree in civil engineering and a master’s in structural engineering; he earned his PhD degree in structural engineering from Virginia Tech in 1965. During his professional career in higher education, he held positions from professor to department chairman to associate dean to dean and, finally, president, serving on the faculties of Vanderbilt University, West Virginia University, Wayne State University and New York City College of Technology.

Beaufait began his journey in painting early in his academic career, wanting some artwork to hang in his office. Not being able to afford to purchase any, he decided to solve the problem himself, using Pratt & Lambert latex paint accent colors and plywood. That was in 1966, and he’s been painting ever since.

Friend and fellow artist Victor Letonoff says, “Fred displays a draftsman-like quality that, when combined with his use of color, adds a boldness to his work. At the same time, he retains a powerful simplicity.” Beaufait’s works are in private collections all around the U.S. Delaware Beach Life magazine wrote a feature piece on his artwork in the April 2013 edition.

The show may be viewed during Nassau Valley’s operational hours. For more information, call 302-645-9463 or go to www.nassauvalley.com.
