Euler gets two goals in two minutes as Cape beats Worcester 4-0

The game was close and then it wasn’t. The undefeated Cape soccer team was getting all it wanted from Worcester Prep Sept. 24 at Legends Stadium, leading 1-0 on a kick-back goal by Bill Swontek off a rebounded Max Euler indirect kick at 23:17 of the first half.

The Vikings, working within the system, controlled field position but couldn’t find the back of the net outside of the set-piece score and were clinging to a 1-0 halftime advantage.

The Mallards' best chance came late in the first half off a volley of shots on the same push, including a header just over the crossbar and another ticketed for a score that was headed away by Kai Vitella, who tucked in behind goalie Griffin Kammerer to save the day.

The second half found Cape once again pushing the action, as starters Elliot Young and Drew Mulcahy sat out with injuries, and a couple of yellow cards kept two other starters on the bench for prolonged periods.

Sam Young, Jack Harmon, Jack Ashby, Nestor Bermudez, Josh Lesher and Jose Santana all got extended playing time and rose to the occasion.

But it was Euler who scored twice within two minutes at 29:53 and 31:53 into the second half, on assists from Bermudez and Lesher, to put the game out of reach.

“They were good, a very physical team. It was 1-0 for the first 50 minutes until we broke it open,” said Euler. “It felt like a closer game than 4-0."

Cape’s final goal of the game was scored by Santana off an assist from Lesher.

Cape outshot the Mallards 18-6.

Cape will host Milford at Legends Stadium at noon, Saturday, Sept. 28. The Bucs are 3-2 with a 2-1 loss to Saint Mark's and a 2-0 loss to Indian River.

“Milford is a fast team and a good team,” said coach Gary Montalto.
