U.S. Sen. Tom Carper reminds all students, parents and teachers that his office is accepting applications for U.S. service academy nominations from Delaware students. Carper encourages those interested in attending the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy or U.S. Military Academy at West Point to apply for a nomination through his office.
“As a former naval flight officer and retired U.S. Navy captain, I appreciate how the benefits of military and public service shape one's future,” said Carper. “The academies seek future leaders who possess the whole-person concept, which includes having good moral character, a commendable academic record, medical and physical fitness, the desire to serve and the motivation to lead. I encourage Delawareans who believe they fit this mold to apply to attend a service academy after graduation.”
To be considered for a congressional nomination, students must meet all of the general requirements of their academy of choice and submit an online application, along with supporting documents, to Carper’s office by Tuesday, Oct. 15. Students can access the online application by visiting http://carper.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/service-academy-nominations. Students are encouraged to get all their materials in before that date.
Requirements for nominations are U.S. citizenship, or having obtained it by graduation; Delaware residency; congressional nomination to one of the academies; at least 17 years of age but not older than 23 by July 1 of entering year; unmarried, not pregnant, no legal obligation to support children; completion of SAT-I or ACT examinations; meeting academy physical requirements and medical examination; and strong moral character.
