UD hockey loses to Monmouth 2-1 on So Sweet A Cat Field

So Sweet A Cat - The University of Delaware lost a field hockey game to Monmouth University 2-1 Sept. 29 on So Sweet A Cat Field. The field turf was made possible thanks to a generous donation from Jan Freed and Kathleen Stefanelli, who owned a racehorse named So Sweet A Cat, the name taken from a poem titled “Mistress Gurton’s Cat: A domestic tale" by Mary Darby Robinson. OK, you can wake up now. I remember a racehorse named Mister Fanny Face. I wonder if I donated $2 million to upgrade the softball field on the condition that it be named Mister Fanny Face Field or Down Low Doodle Field, if Cape would take my money.

Blessed are the bewildered - This is a paragraph that led off a football game story two weeks ago, where Cape lost at Archbishop Spalding 44-20: “A $300,000 digital scoreboard rose high behind the Cape bench, beating down a heavy bass, 'Bring 'em out! Bring 'em out!' Cape charged across the turf as NFL music busted the night air. The home stands were packed and there were no stands for visitors, just room for starship scoreboard. Vikings players were hyped and piped.” That caused some phone calls to radio host Dan Gaffney on morning radio 105.9 and then the Cape district office got called, which caused a district-wide scoreboard investigation. Finally Athletic Director Bob Cilento got called, “What are we doing buying a $300,000 scoreboard?” Bob responded, “What scoreboard?” I was told by a Gazette colleague that someone called the station and said, ”You have to read between the lines with Fredman." Knowing that the team was away might have helped.

Town dog - The town dog has gone the way of the street urchin and the hobo hanging at the local train station. Nowadays every creature has to have a reason and a permit to loiter or reconnoiter for no reason. So when is greyhound weekend? Is it just me and my many fair-weather beach friends who think many rescue owners of these pointy-headed lopers on leashes look forlorn? Actually, it’s them. I certainly don’t want an intervention from any retaliatory rescue group. Heck, I’ve been chasing rabbits my entire life and never caught one. Speaking of rabbits and lost traditions, do they still do the bunny hop at weddings?

Snippets - The East Coast Garden Center off both sides of Cordrey Road east of Millsboro was the venue Saturday morning for the Corn to Run, a 5K race through a cornfield. I caught a photo of new friends Irapaul Turner and Natalie Dorset before the run. Natalie is a member of the Black Girls Run Club, while Irapaul looks like an NFL linebacker. Patrick Boettcher, 32, a former Delaware runner, ran stride for stride with Enos Benbow, 31, former Salisbury runner.

Patrick won the race over Enos 16:14 to 16:15. The two could be described as fast friends. Jen Novak Cawthern, 39, was the women’s winner in 19:54. An older runner said to me afterward, ”Boy, that girl who won really had a nice figure." I told him, "That ain’t no girl, that’s a 39-year-old woman, and they don’t say figure anymore; they say body.”

Statistics do not matter, it's all in the interpretation. The Eagles, 1-3 to start the season, are the first team in NFL history to accumulate 1,000 yards passing and 750 rushing through the first four games of the season. A quick analysis leads to the conclusion just can’t stop anybody. Cape’s football team has a similar profile.

Kadijah Doughty, Cape’s 2012-13 Female Athlete of the Year, is playing volleyball for Delaware Technical Community College Terry Campus in Dover. The Hawks of coach Cindy Savage are 12-2. DeDah has 102 kills and 49 blocks, easily leading the team. She is considered a Division I prospect. Cape hockey plays at Delmar at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 1. The Wildcats are 42-4 in the previous two seasons; all four losses are to Cape, including two in the state finals. This game will not be played on So Sweet A Cat Field. The town will turn out for the game, and the football team will watch for a while as the state's two best teams will be going after each other. And there’s a new Wawa to resupply for the drive home. Go on now, git!
