With the Cape May-Lewes Ferry as the backdrop, BocceFest 2013 brought out teams from all over the country to compete in the double-elimination tournament.
The inaugural event was won by Rehoboth-based team Deboccery, who took home $500, four cases of Dogfish Head beer and four Dogfish Head Patagonia backpacks filled with Dogfish merchandise.
The event was organized by Major League Bocce, which was founded as DC Bocce League in 2004 by a group of friends. The first season began with 10 teams and 50 players. As popularity grew, so did the league. It expanded to a year round competition, and events are held inside and outside throughout the year. It has also spread outside the Washington D.C., area, with leagues in Boston, Philadelphia, Dallas and Pittsburgh.
