Wheatley appointed to Association of Professional Engineers

Long-time local businessman Bob Wheatley was named recently by Gov. Jack Markell to serve on the governing board for the state’s Association of Professional Engineers.

A resident of Laurel, Wheatley is a former president of the local chamber of commerce, serves as chairman of Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission, is a commercial Realtor and works as the business development director for the Whayland Co.

“I was honored and humbled when I learned of the governor’s decision to appoint me to this prestigious and important board here in Delaware,” says Wheatley, who will serve for an initial term of four years. “I will do my best to ensure that his faith in me is warranted, and will always serve in a professional and ethical manner as I fulfill the duties of this new position.”

The Delaware Association of Professional Engineers was formed by Title 24, Chapter 28 of the Delaware State Code, known as the “Delaware Professional Engineers Act.” The stated objectives of the Association are to regulate the practice of engineering in Delaware, to provide for the registration of qualified persons as professional engineers, to create and define industry specific terms, to create an organization for regulating the practice of engineering, and other duties as determined by the state legislature.

The council that oversees the association is made up of 15 members, 12 of whom are elected by fellow members. The three that are appointed by the governor must, by law, represent all three counties in the First State.

Wheatley assumed his new position on the 15-member board Oct. 1.
