Orion String Quartet to kick off Coastal Concerts’ new season Oct. 19
Hear one of today’s most in-demand chamber ensembles at 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 19, in Lewes, when the Orion String Quartet opens Coastal Concerts’ 15th season of presenting world-renowned classical musicians. This appearance by one of America’s foremost string quartets promises to get the five-concert series, which runs through March, off to a strong start.
The Orion String Quartet currently serves as artist members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Quartet-in-Residence at New York’s Mannes College of Music. With brothers Daniel and Todd Phillips on violins, Steven Tenenbom on viola, and Timothy Eddy on cello, the group has received wide-ranging commissions from a host of contemporary composers and collaborated with such legendary figures as Pablo Casals, András Schiff, Rudolf Serkin, Isaac Stern, Pinchas Zukerman, and Peter Serkin.
Together for more than 25 years, the Orion has been consistently praised for the fresh perspective and individuality it brings to live performances. After one such performance, a New York Times review read, “The musicians managed to seduce the rustling, coughing, whispering audience to utterly silent awe.”
Known for its cutting-edge programming, the Orion will offer a mixture of classical, romantic, and 20th-century pieces. Leading off the evening will be the short and infrequently played “Concertino” by Igor Stravinsky, as well as the equally concise String Quartet, Op. 28, by Anton Webern. The remainder of the program will be devoted to Mozart’s String Quartet No. 23, K. 590, and Robert Schumann’s String Quartet Op. 41, No. 3. Both works are the final contributions by these composers to the string quartet form.
The 7 p.m. concert will take place at wheelchair-accessible Bethel United Methodist Church Hall, Fourth and Market, Lewes. Tickets are $30. Ages 10-18, as well as one adult per youth, are admitted free with advance reservations made by calling 888-212-6458.
