JuneRose Futcher to open On the Waterways exhibit Oct. 20
Native Delawarean and emergent maritime photographer JuneRose Futcher will be exhibiting her photography in On The Waterways: Maritime Impressionism in Photographs at The Buttery Restaurant in Lewes. Futcher is a recipient of the Delaware State Arts Council opportunity grant and will be exhibiting from Oct. 20 to Dec. 2. The opening reception will be held Sunday, Oct. 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
Futcher grew up in a sailing family on the Delaware Bay in Lewes Yacht Club sailboat races, and as a young sailor her artistic expressions were cultivated in sailboats, ships and seascapes in Cape Henlopen schools. As an accomplished competitive sailor and professional sailing instructor on the waterways of North America, photographing sailing and marine environments have inspired award winning photographs. In the maritime subject of photography, her deep and enduring passion for sailing and maritime makes her a natural impressionist of maritime architecture and masterpiece of design.
Her first art award at the Rehoboth Art League as a student at Cape Henlopen High School and graduate award in arts and crafts, more than 30 years ago, were seascape impressions, just like her contemporary and historic photographs of the Delmarva waterways.
Futcher has been shooting photographs (and also working in metals and pastels) of maritime environments since she was 10 years old. Her family, sailing and wordly community of friends and mentors have been instrumental in her achievements; most recently the grant award had inspiration from her mother, JuneRose Futcher and the Bay & River Pilots Association of Delaware.
Futcher went on to study communications theory at Temple University and later in 2010 earned AAS in communications at Delaware Technical Community College in Georgetown. In the early 90s on Texas waterways, as well as in Delaware, Futcher started photographing sailing regattas, while racing sailboats extensively in the United States. Upon enrolling at Delaware Tech, she excelled in the photographic arts courses. Futcher studied under master photographers in a rigorous academic program. Her photographs were published by Sussex County government administration and won honorable mention at the Owens Campus student show.
As her work earned praise and expanded, Futcher's Friends of the Lewes Library Delmarva On View contest and show photographs were evaluated for publishing; Futcher’s photograph of a traditional Greenland kayak was selected for publication in the literary anthology, "No Place Like Here" about southern Delaware. Recently, she took on the role as the DOV curator, co-producing the fourth annual contest and show, which featured 100 artist submissions represented scenic and dynamic Delmarva communities.
After being selected as an artist for a juried competition sponsored by Packard Reath & Gallery 50 in 2011 for her abstract seascape, Futcher considered a solo exhibition.
As an annual Southern Delaware Help Portrait event crew, Futcher is a popular and frequent charity art contributor to Delaware Tech and the Overfalls Foundation of Lewes, among others. She is a board member of the Del Tech Owens Alumni Association, a Coastal Camera Club member, and a United States Sailing Association sailing instructor. This first private artist show will be a professional highlight for Futcher. When she puts her camera down, she goes sailing for inspiration.
