Bobby and Bowler - What’s the chance of being a Cape graduate with a 4.0 at Sacred Heart University into her sophomore year and being a member of the Division I bowling team and running into former New York Mets manager Bobby Valentine in the vending machine court? Pretty good after Valentine was named executive director of athletics at the university. Bobby Valentine is from Connecticut and was a three-time first-team all-state football and baseball player recruited to Southern Cal, later selected in first round by the Los Angeles Dodgers. But now, like the rest of us, he’s just some guy by the vending machine trying to get change for a dollar. The Pioneers have the 13th-ranked women’s bowling team in the country. They begin competition Nov. 1 and will be appearing at the UMES Hawk Classic at Millsboro Lanes Nov. 16. Allie is the daughter of Wendy and Mike, and her brother is Cape golfer Mikey Destasio. I am Grandpa Fredman after I adopted them all a few years ago. By the way, the UMES Hawks from nearby Princess Anne, Md., are the 2013 national champions. That was the fifth national championship for UMES. The team had two bowlers from Columbia and two from Mexico. I don’t get it either. The UMES Hall of Fame lists many illustrious members, including the late Sherman Plunkett and Johnny Sample and also Art Shell and Emerson Boozer.
Silent Auction - I think it’s a great idea and I’m a player. The special football jerseys worn by Cape in its game against Bullis Oct. 4 are up for silent auction as part of October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The auction ends Monday, Oct. 13, at 8 p.m at the Greene Turtle in Lewes. Sounds like I need a peep by proxy who drinks beer and makes wise decisions. Bid forms will be located at the field house during this Friday’s Dover game.
Aphasia - I announced the new Inductees – Janet Nowakowski, Carolyn Ivins and Ruth Sponaugle Skoglund – into the Cape Legends Coaches Ring of Honor at halftime of last Thursday’s Cape versus Sussex Tech field hockey game at Champions Stadium and before the Friday night Homecoming game versus the Bullis School. Why me is a good question; I suppose for my street cred? The on-field microphone Friday night produced a half second delay back to the speaker and at times I could hear myself sounding really slow and stupid like I was speaking at a school board meeting.
Blond Bunny - Have you ever seen the camera find the wife of Peyton Manning after he throws a touchdown pass? So why the cut away and jump around wife of Tony Romo a dozen times a game? It’s the Dallas glitz and cute factor. Some network nitwit thinks that’s what football guys want, but they are wrong. We want to see real people bonging hoagie nubs and gulping fountain Mountain Dew.
Flat Calm No Wind - The 43rd World Sunfish Champions are taking place this week in the Delaware Bay with management headquarters at the Lewes Yacht Club. Many years ago I interviewed a Sunfish National Champion named Harry League who survived four days of no wind to be crowned National Champion. I asked him his secret and he said, “Intense concentration.” Puff Daddy sounds like a good name for a Sunfish. Heavier sailors like a strong wind on their tails so they can "Go with the Mo!”
Snippets - During halftime of a 35-7 Cape deficit to Bullis Friday night, I went over to the fence for something to lean on and a field hockey conversation broke out. Men talking corners and shots on goal, I suggested we all stop it but that’s the way guys roll and like I tell all coaches, “The better your team is the more people who want to coach it.”
The 9-1 Cape volleyball team will host 8-0 Polytech at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8. This is a chance for Cape to move into the conference championship conversation with Smyrna, Caesar Rodney and Polytech.
Cape field hockey plays at Woodbridge Tuesday at 4 p.m. That is a double trap game; there is the ride through Ellendale and the Blue Raiders, who beat Sussex Tech in overtime and lost to CR and Polytech by a single goal. Get directions to new field. “Don’t Go Back to Bridgeville," an REM classic. Go on now, git!
