October 9, 2013

The Lewes Historical Society will host featured presentations, including various topics relating to Lewes history at noon, Fridays, Oct. 11, Nov. 8, Jan. 10, Feb.14, March 14 and May 9. These free programs will be held at Hotel Rodney, 142 Second St. in Lewes. Presentations will last 20-30 minutes, followed by a question-answer period.

Audience members have the option to bring their own bagged lunch or purchase a $12 boxed lunch from Rose & Crown. This program is sponsored by Hotel Rodney.

The Friday, Oct. 11 Lunch & Learn welcomes Judith Roales as she presents "Lighthouses in Delaware Bay."

Roales has researched and collected the history of Delaware lighthouses since 1964 when, as a reporter for the Wilmington Morning News, she was first captivated by the Cherry Island Rear Range Lighthouse in Wilmington. When she retired from the newspaper business in 2000 as publisher of the St. Petersburg Times in Florida, she returned to this area and became active in the newly-formed Delaware River & Bay Lighthouse Foundation, which she served as president from 2006 through 2012. She has written extensively about Delaware lighthouses, including Arcadia Publishing’s popular history book, "Delaware Lighthouses and Range Lights," and four guide books for the Delaware’s Lighthouse Trail series.

Roales' presentation for the Lewes Historical Society’s Lewes Lunch and Learn gathering will pose the question “How many Lewes lighthouses were there?” The answer, she’ll tell with photos and facts, is more than a dozen.
