Show offers 37 new works by Roger Dellar
October 12, 2013

The current exhibition at Peninsula Gallery presents works by the British artist, Roger Dellar titled Interiors Inspired by Light. The show, which presents 37 new works by the artist, includes paintings of local restaurants and shops in Lewes and the Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton.

Gallery owner BJ Clark said, “While teaching at the Rehoboth Art League, Roger continued to paint each day and we thought it would be a great idea for him to capture the local scene as part of the show.”

Local restaurants, including Striper Bites and The Buttery, were happy to have Dellar capture views of dinner and lunch. In addition, Edie Bee’s Confection shop and nearby Nectar Café and Juice Bar and an image of the inner workings of the Dogfish Brewery are presented.

Dellar is a British figurative artist who works from his home studio in Surrey, England. He travels widely and is internationally known for his work in several media, including watercolor, pastel and oil. He visits the United States frequently and has been a resident artist at the Peninsula Gallery his only American venue, for the last 13 years.

Dellar’s art reflects his keen interest in people and their behavior, and the way the play of light transforms a subject. His painting depicts people in everyday situations, captured in an instantly recognizable moment.

A declared modern impressionist, his work is usually done plein air with the canvas reflecting a freedom of movement derived from rapid broad strokes of color coming together to represent an image caught in time. His work is particularly appealing in capturing the interiors of public spaces with the reflections of light from the street playing off and enhancing the character of the room.

Dellar is a member of The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, The Pastel Society, and The Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Since 1996 he has been an active member of The Wapping Group, an invitation only group of 25 artists who capture the views of life along the Thames River in England.  He has has won numerous awards for his painting including: in 2010 The Bath Prize Best Oil Painting, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Le Clerc Fowler Medal and the Pastel Society, Unison Pastel Award in 2011.

The exhibition extends through Wednesday, Oct. 30. The Peninsula Gallery, located at 520 E Savannah Road, is currently in its 17th year and presents the work of more than 20 local, regional and international artists.
