Although it looked like a pay-off was taking place following the Oct. 15 Sussex County Council meeting, it was only a councilman getting out his wallet to purchase two quarts of pole beans to take to his mother in Florida.

Councilman George Cole was giving the money to council-watcher Dan Kramer, who also happens to grow a few crops.

After giving a grant to a pumpkin festival in Millville, Cole exclaimed there should be a Sussex Pole Bean Festival, and probably in Greenwood – that's where Dan Kramer lives.

“It's hard to find a good pole bean,” Cole said.

Why not? Sussex celebrates all kinds of produce including apples, scrapple, tomatoes, pumpkins, peaches and watermelons.
