Relentless Cape soccer pushes past Dover 3-0

Cape 10-1 on the season
October 17, 2013

The Cape soccer team hit the ground running and never stopped for 80 minutes  Oct. 15 at  Legends Stadium, dominating a 9-1-1 Dover team and wining 3-0 .

The win boosts Cape’s record to 10-1 with four games remaining.

“That’s as good as we’ve ever played, from the beginning to the end the entire game. Every player who saw the field got into it, pushing the ball forward and giving it to the open man," said coach Gary Montalto.

“When I first came here, I was struck by how good the field hockey and girls' lacrosse teams were. They were fun to watch because they moved the ball, had great skill and it didn’t matter who scored. They are still doing that, and we have started to figure it out as well.”

Cape got on the board early at 3:19 into the game as Josh Lester received a pass from Billy Swontek and calmly beat Dover goalie Jonathan Carson to the far post, keeping the ball on the carpet.

Cape had numerous other runs in the first half but couldn’t cash in.

Early in the second half at 43:28, it was Swontek again on the assist, lofting a pass to Kai Vitella, who headed it into the corner of the net.

The final score came at 49:04 on a goal by Drew Mulcahy with Miguel Marino-Sanchez getting the assist.

Cape outshot the Senators 19-2 with a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Griffin Kammerer and Danny Lewis shared the shutout for Cape.

Cape has home games remaining against St. Thomas More Oct. 17 and a dangerous 9-2-2-Delmar team before playing at Smyrna and Indian River.

Note: Montalto said after the game that Max Euler and Swontek were very special players having great seasons. Playing strong defense were Elliot Young, Conor Donohoe, Tyler Malloy and Joe McMillon.
