Rehoboth Historical Society to host Russ McCabe at luncheon Nov. 16
The Rehoboth Beach Historical Society Luncheon will be held Saturday, Nov. 16, at Kings Creek Country Club, 1 Kings Creek Way, Rehoboth. A cash bar will be available at 11 a.m. and the buffet will begin at 11:30 a.m. Advance reservations are required and must be received by Wednesday, Nov. 13. The guest speaker at this year’s luncheon is former Delaware State Archivist Russ McCabe. McCabe’s presentation is “The Delaware History Trail: A Journey to Discover the First State’s Historic Treasures.” The Delaware History Trail is a self-guided driving tour of significant historical sites around Delaware. Historic markers with numeric codes are placed near the sites. Drivers can obtain “passports” from the Delaware Tourism Office. After visiting at least six sites in each of the three counties, trail-goers receive a book as a reward for sending in a completed passport.
McCabe played a key role in the construction of a new archive facility to house the state’s documentary treasures as well as being a primary author of Delaware’s first comprehensive Public Records Law. In 2005, McCabe was appointed state archivist. He retired in 2009 and was presented the annual Governor’s Heritage Award from Gov. Jack Markell. With a career that spanned nearly 31 years, McCabe’s expertise in Delaware’s past makes him an expert on the treasures and fascinating history of this state.
Tickets for the luncheon are $30 per person for members and $34 for nonmembers.
The menu for the event includes chicken with mushroom chardonnay, baked Cajun salmon, crab cakes, carved flank steak, all served with roasted potatoes and vegetable medley and a chef’s selection of desserts. All meals include iced tea and coffee.
The Rehoboth Beach Museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday; 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Beginning Nov. 1, the museum will be closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Parking is available, and the museum is handicapped accessible. The newest exhibit, Shipwrecked, explores tales of shipwrecks along the Mid-Atlantic coast. The Beach Eats exhibit offers a taste and a trip down Memory Lane of fun foods and fine dining.
