October 25, 2013

The Beacon Middle School volleyball team defeated Phillis Wheatley Middle School 25-20 and 25-17 Oct. 21 to move its record to 5-0 on the season. In five matches this season, the team has only given up one game to their opponents.

"We had over 40 girls try out for the team," said head coach Jen Celano. "They are a great group of girls that work incredibly hard."

"These girls are pretty impressive," said assistant coach Samantha Purple. "They are a great group of kids, and they have earned their victories this year."

Beacon took to the road for a return match with the Vikings of Mariner Middle School Oct. 24. Beacon took the first meeting 2-0 Oct. 7.

"Mariner is a very strong opponent," said Celano. "Coaches Nicole [Scott] and Cheryl [Cannon] really have those girls playing tough. We're very excited to play them again."

Beacon and Mariner will travel to Smyrna Friday, Oct. 25, for the DAAD Middle School Invitational Tournament. Play begins at 4 p.m.
