Local residents receive volunteer awards

Miller serves his community in many ways through his service to the Boys & Girls Club of Oak Orchard/Riverdale and the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company. Miller has served at nearly every level of both organizations, from fundraiser to board member. His leadership is responsible for the day-to-day positive impact on the 87 club members who have come to rely on his involvement. BY STEVEN BILLUPS
John Gladwell, center, accepts his volunteer award in the Community Service category from first lady Carla Markell and Lt. Gov. Matt Denn. Since starting Meals on Wheels Lewes/Rehoboth in 2005, Gladwell has delivered more than 15,000 meals to the elderly clients on his route, created an outreach committee, trained other volunteers and dedicated more than 2,800 hours to helping others. In addition to Miller’s work with Meals on Wheels, he is also a dedicated volunteer for Conley’s Chapel Thrift Store, where he stocks shelves, sorts and cleans. Through his work with Conley’s and Meals on Wheels, Gladwell has worked tirelessly to bring smiles and hope to those in his community. BY STEVEN BILLUPS
After receiving his volunteer award from first lady Carla Markell and Lt. Gov. Matt Denn, Bob Patterson requested he be photographed with a group of volunteers and staff with Sussex County Habitat for Humanity. For almost 20 years, Patterson has been an integral part of Sussex Habitat. Serving as construction volunteer, board of directors member and a member of the construction management team, Patterson has completed homes in more than 10 towns in Sussex County. In the last five years, Patterson has served in excess of 2,500 hours, having completed 22 projects in the last year alone. Patterson’s love of Habitat knows no bounds. In addition to his work in Sussex County, he has participated in builds in Alabama, Mexico and Guatemala. The 31st Annual Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer Awards were held Oct. 22 at Dover Downs Hotel. Local residents John Gladwell, Lucy Mehl, Patrick Miller and Bob Patterson were recognized for their many volunteer hours of community service.

Shown accepting her award for Community Service from first lady Carla Markell and Lt. Gov. Matt Dean is Milford resident Lucy Mehl, center. Since 2004, Mehl has accumulated more than 1,400 hours of volunteer service at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge Nature Center. Mehl does everything from creating activities and acting as a guide for children at Prime Hook to volunteer work with seniors at Milford Senior Center.

She is also an active member of Seaside Jewish Community and First Presbyterian Church in Milford. Mehl coordinates many charity events at the church such as the Souper Bowl, which was a canned food drive. Mehl brings fun and creativity wherever she goes, creating a themed hat for each event in which she participates. Mehl is also a member of the Milford Garden Club, volunteers at the Circle of Light Ministries and is a longtime officer of the WDGA. Along with teaching square dancing, Mehl participates with the Milford Lions Club, Milford Senior Center, VFW and Delaware Hospice.
