Greater Lewes Community Village to begin serving members Nov. 1

October 31, 2013

The Greater Lewes Community Village, a nonprofit charitable organization, has announced it is ready to accept and serve members as of Friday, Nov. 1. Founded by a group of concerned Lewes-area volunteers, GLCV is part of a nationwide village movement involving similar initiatives in well over 100 communities all over the country. The mission of GLCV is to offer assistance to its members, who are Lewes-area seniors, to help them remain in their homes safely as long as possible.

GLCV members have access to volunteer support services, including transportation, household assistance, friendly visiting, and such things as occasional pet walking and yard work. In addition, GLCV members have access to prescreened, vetted vendors, such as electricians, plumbers, and yard services, as well as personal and technical services including computer support.

Other important benefits of village membership are village-sponsored educational and social programs. This one-stop shopping opportunity will provide confidence and security for village members as they continue to live at home. Membership requires payment of a modest fee. GLVC also plans to offer financial support to qualifying potential members to help with membership costs.

The village already has more than two dozen volunteers ready to assist GLCV members. GLCV volunteers are all interviewed, vetted, and oriented prior to providing services to members. Similarly, GLCV has enlisted an initial roster of more than 30 vendors to provide a wide range of services, often at discounted rates.

Vendors also have been screened and vetted, which includes a process of interview, criminal histories records check, and reference checks. More vendors will be added as they apply and are approved in the coming months.

Those interested in learning more about GLCV and its programs can come by the village offices at the Blue House, 225 Schley Ave. in Lewes during office hours each weekday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; call GLCV at 302-703-2568; email lewesvillage@gmail.com; or go to www.GreaterLewesCommunityVillage.org.

Supporting GLCV through tax-free donations helps strengthen the Lewes community and meaningfully contributes to the well-being of friends and neighbors. Donors interested in supporting GLCV’s overall mission are encouraged to contact GLCV.
