Logan Shuttleworth wins Middle School Championship

Beacon Middle School eighth-grader Logan Shuttleworth captured the Henlopen Conference Middle School Championship Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 30, in Milford in a new course record time of 13:25 for the 2.1-mile course. The previous course record was held by Emily Perry from Chipman in 13:30. The Beacon girls finished fifth in the 13-team field with 144 points, while the Beacon boys were 11th overall. Beacon’s Olivia Brozefsky finished 17th in 15:16, while Barcin Akgunduz finished 31st in 15:55. Devon Carter was 32nd in 15:56, while Yesenia Ramirez was 44th in 16:10 for Mariner Middle School. For the Beacon boys, Daniel Brown ran 15:09, while Mike Cerchio ran 16:22. Gabe Bailey turned in a 17:14, while Olin Kennedy ran 21:02. Felix Cruz Harmon rounded out Beacon at 22:46.

Shuttleworth, a Youth All-American for the past five years, will race in the Delaware State Middle School Open Championships this Saturday with her Seashore Striders Club Team in Wilmington.

Ravens win Boys County Championships

The Sussex Tech cross country team, led by longtime coach Lou Nicoletti, placed six in the top 10 to run away with the title with 23 points, while Cape Henlopen finished second with 34 points. Austin MacElrevey won the individual title in 16:55, followed by Victor Rueda in 17:03 in second. Jake Bamforth was third in 17:22, while Sonny Landis was fourth in 17:45. Frosh Ben Bamforth was the number four for Tech and fifth overall in a time of 17:51. Javon Sample (18:00), Ryan Thornburg (18:01), and Solomon Cox (18:09) grabbed the next three positions for the Vikings.

Vikings win Girls County Championships

Madison MacElrevey won her second straight individual title in 21:18 and this time led her team to the championship with 22 points, while Sussex Tech finished second with 50 points, led by third-place finisher Natasha Taylor in 21:44. Rachel Best ran her best race of the season to grab second in 21:35, while Keren Rams was fourth in 21:46. Indian River finished third in the team standings with 75 points.

The Henlopen Conference Championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, at Killens Pond State Park beginning with the junior varsity races at 2 p.m.

Sea Witch Fall 5K Classic

A new event record was set at the Sea Witch Fall Classic 5K this past Sunday as 485 finishers turned out to make the 24th annual the largest Sea Witch race ever and a new Grove Park record. Enos Benbow easily took the male overall title in 16:48, while Dan MacElrevey won the male masters in 17:56. Alyssa Pietrobono won the female overall title in 19:59, while Linda Reck won the female masters in 24:10.
