Blepharoplasty in Ancient Turkey

February 13, 2014

During 129-216 A.D. the practice of plastic surgery gained momentum and sophistication due to increased obsession with the human body.  Galen, a plastic surgeon during this time period, practiced methods to fix eyes that drooped.  He also preformed Rhinoplastys on men and women of wealth seeking a more balanced and symmetrical face.  After the fall of Rome many of Galens medical texts were lost.  Of 600 texts thought to have been written, only 20 are known to have survived.

Today, a procedure called blepharoplasty (eyelift) is similar to the method Galen used to fix droopy eyes.  Eyelifts are preformed to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both.  This procedure can restore firmness around the eye area resulting in a rested, alert and more youthful appearance.

Often, excess skin around the eyes interferes with ones vision.  If you believe the skin around your eyes is impairing your vision call your eye doctor to schedule an appointment for a visual field test.  The results of this test will determine whether or not the removal of excess skin around the eyes will improve your vision.   If a blepharoplasty is medically necessary to improve your vision it may be possible to have the procedure covered by insurance.
