Tri-State Bird Rescue begins construction on Wildlife Response Annex

Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research in Newark has begun construction on its Wildlife Response Annex. The state-of-the-art facility will provide a dedicated space for the nonprofit organization to effectively treat wildlife following oil spills and other large-scale incidents. It will offer a space for training responders, veterinarians, agency and industry colleagues, and other wildlife partners.

The new annex, which was designed by Staikos Associates Architects, will harmonize with the existing Frink Center for Wildlife and with its natural surroundings. To help conserve resources, plans include a gray water system, and a solar power array will be added shortly after construction is completed. The facility will also include a pathology lab, examination room, intensive care unit, and 1,200 square feet for washing, rinsing, and drying oiled wildlife.

“We are thrilled to see our plans becoming a reality,” said Lisa Smith, Tri-State’s executive director. “We received over 200 oiled animals for care after Hurricane Sandy last year, which just underscored the need for us to expand into this facility.”
