Friends of Prime Hook announce winners of photography contest

Leslie Sinclair of Rehoboth Beach won first place in the Delmarva Scenery category for “Marsh Sunrise,” taken on Smith Island in the Chesapeake Bay.
Peggy Douglas of Rehoboth Beach won first place in Native Plants and Flowers category for “Leaf in Rain.”
Allan Stuart Levin of Lewes won third place in The Beauty of Prime Hook category for this photo of an adult great blue heron at sunset.
Dick Snyder of Lewes captured two ospreys near the canal in Lewes in “Bringing Home Dinner.”
Debra Payette of Oceanport, N.J. and Rehoboth Beach won honorable mention in Other Native Wildlife for this picture of horseshoe crab on shore of Delaware Bay in “Love Is in the Air.”
Robert Pilkington of Lewes captured “Golden Hour at Gordons Pond” in the Delmarva Scenery category.

The winners of the 10th annual Nature Photography Contest sponsored by the Friends of Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge were announced Oct. 19 at the refuge's Discover the Outdoors Day.  Photos will be on display at the refuge through Dec. 15.

The contest included entries in five categories: Delmarva Scenery, Native Birds, Native Wildlife, Native Flowers and Plants and Beauty of Prime Hook. Age groups included junior student up to age 12, senior student age 13 to 17 and adult.

Best in Show was awarded to Jerry amEnde for his photo of a Belted Kingfisher.

In the Native Birds category, amEnde also swept first, second and third places. Honorable mention went to Bill Parris. In Native Wildlife, amEnde again took top honors with Sandy Morgan and Scott Firguski awarded second and third, respectively.  Honorable mentions went to Steven Hess, Deb Payette and Sharon Young.

Peggy Douglas took first place in Native Plants & Flowers with Sue Eberhart second and Jane Melhorn Mruk third. Melhorn Mruk and Robert Pilkington were awarded honorable mentions.

Leslie Sinclair was awarded top honors in the Delmarve Scenery category. Deb Payette took second and Paula Shannon earned third. Terry Willis received honorable mention.

First place in Beauty of Prime Hook category went to Ed Chamberlain. Jerry amEnde took second while Allan Levin took third. Honorable mentions went to Jane Melhorn Mruk and Robin Ray.

Sara Figurski swept the junior student category with first-, second- and third-place awards, plus two honorable mentions. Jordyn Frieze did the same in the senior student category with first, second and third awards, plus two honorable mentions.

The Friends of Prime Hook  awarded a few Friends' Picks to student photographers Denay Cox, Hykeem Evans, Evan Mruk, Marysol Gonzalez and Garrett Biggs.
