Trains join planes at the Air Mobility Museum through Jan. 2

The Air Mobility Command Museum welcomes Shoreline Garden Railroad Club back for its fourth annual large-scale model train layout inside the main hangar Nov. 24.

These are not the typical small-size Christmas trains. The locomotives can be more than 36 inches long and can weigh upwards of 40 pounds. Garden scale trains are meant to be run outside in large backyard layouts, but the AMC Museum has room in the big hangar to let visitors enjoy them in warmth and comfort, rain or shine.

This year’s layout is the biggest yet and allows the operation of four trains at one time. Volunteers from the club are happy to explain their hobby. The museum’s newest exhibit addition is the C-5A Galaxy. Weather permitting, the C-5 will be open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday in December.

Visitors can also fly one of the flight simulators for free and do some Christmas shopping at the Museum Store with special sale items on hand.

The exhibit is sponsored by the AMC Museum Foundation and the Shoreline Garden Railroad Club. The trains run from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. until Jan. 2.

Take exit 91 off Route 1 and follow the AMC Museum signs for easy access. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Admission and parking are free and photography is welcome. For more information, call the museum at 302-677-5939 or go to amcmuseum.org.
