Coach Steve Re no longer the new guy, he's the Cape guy

Boys' basketball schedule front-loaded with tough games
November 26, 2013

Cape basketball coach Steve Re is no longer the new guy, he is a Cape Guy. Re has earned his wings over the last two seasons in front of the toughest traveling crowd on the Cape sports scene.

The last two seasons, Re has kept ahead of the breaking wave that would crush a poorly coached team. In both 2011 and 2012, Re’s teams finished 12-8 then won a first-round game in the state tournament.

Last season, the Vikings upset favored Polytech in the Henlopen Conference championship game, then beat Laurel at home in the first round of the state tournament.

The Vikings were then shocked and dropped at Salesianum  on a Saturday afternoon 69-44.

Cape returns a wealth of experience for the 2013-14 season, led by high-scoring senior guards Tyreik Burton and Jon Warren along with point guard Tony Floyd and defensive specialist Solomon Cox.

A big setback before the season was the loss of big man and leading rebounder and shot blocker Andre Grau, who tore his ACL during football season and after surgery is still in the rehab phase of his recovery.

The Vikings went to the free agent market and recruited both Kai Vitella and David Kwan back to basketball, and both athletes were considering taking the season off to get ready for baseball.

Jordan Howell is up from junior varsity, and the swingman has serious game if he focuses and the coaches can harness his talents.

Other players who can step onto the court and contribute prime-time minutes are Raekwon Dukes, Jacob Nolan, Kyle Orton, Ryan Thornburg and Austin Brooks.

Cape’s schedule is front -loaded with some serious teams in the first seven games; all are capable of tagging a loss on the Vikings.

Cape opens with road games at Sussex Tech Friday, Dec. 6, and Smyrna Tuesday, Dec. 10. The Vikings will then host Milford Friday, Dec. 13, and Polytech Tuesday, Dec 17,  before playing at Arundel High Friday, Dec. 20.

Cape plays in the Governors Challenge at the Wicomico Civic Center over winter break facing Edmondson of Maryland Thursday, Dec. 26, and City College Saturday, Dec. 28.

Assistant coaches for Cape are Tommy Rushin, Pat Woods and Shemik Thompson.
