Cape girls' basketball facing a challenging season

November 27, 2013

A retrospective analysis of the recent history of girls' basketball at Cape depends on how you spin it.

Cut loose and reheat a slice from the Lamont Hazzard- and Will Edwards-coached teams from 2010, 2011 and 2012, and you will find a total team record including state tournament play of 51-18.

The 2009 team reached the semifinals after upsetting undefeated Saint Mark’s in the quarterfinals, then lost to Smyrna is the semifinals.

The 2011 squad upset Ursuline in the semifinals to reach the finals for the first time since winning the tournament in 1973. The Vikings led Sanford going into the final quarter but lost 47-41. Cape also lost Johnesha Warren and Meg Bartley along with Jacki Coveleski and were thought to be toast for the foreseeable future.

But Alia Davis transferred back to Cape from Milford for her senior season, while Kadijah Doughty got her inside beast mode game under control as the Vikings put together a 15-7 record, losing to Saint Mark’s in the quarterfinals.

But in the 2013 season, Cape got caught by a lack of firepower and ball handling, and although senior Doughty had a monster year on the inside, the Vikings fell to a record of 6-14 as the Dogs of Despair began barking from the stands that Hazzard and Edwards couldn’t coach, and their teams were just too undisciplined.

Lamont Hazzard himself was a serious player while at Cape, leading the 1996 team to the state final where Cape lost in overtime to Howard. Hazzard scored 30 points in that game, which also included starter Terry Hazard, Bobby Leggins, Darnell Starnd and Corey Clauser with Ronson Burton off the bench.

Hazzard played for Cape the last time the boys reached the finals and coached the last girls' team to reach the finals. And his mother Vicki Hazzard was a seriously good player in the mid-'70s.

Prospects for the 2013-14 season look challenging as Kadijah Doughty has graduated, while sophomore guard Madi Smith is rehabbing from knee surgery that involved multiple ligaments.

Cape opens the season hosting Sussex Tech Friday, Dec. 6, then Smyrna Tuesday, Dec. 10.  The 2013-14 varsity roster includes Anshe Boyer, Abby E’Nama, Taylor Hardy, Shantel Hazzard, Tatyana Jenkins, Madison MacElrevey, Alyssa Miller, Paige Mohr, Alison Palmer, Claudia Ratner, Madi Smith, Elizabeth Sutton, Cailey Thornburg, and Lindsey Voss.
