Women Build gets underway in Sussex County

Upcoming events include Dec. 12 Christmas Bazaar and Dec. 13 Dine and Donate
December 3, 2013

Sussex County Habitat for Humanity is recruiting women throughout Sussex County to participate in a series of opportunities that are part of the International Habitat Women Build program. Women Build challenges and empowers women from all walks of life to help build simple, decent and affordable homes for hardworking and deserving Habitat families in Sussex County.

“As a female contractor, it’s important that we get women involved in the building industry. It’s a refreshing experience to gather together as women on the build site and make a positive change for a family in Sussex County," says Khara Landon, construction leader of the Women Build Committee.

Sussex County Habitat hosted women on the build site in Georgetown Point Nov. 9 to help build a home for Kisha Jones. More than 20 women from all over Sussex County came out to help side the home, tile the bathrooms and kitchen, paint the walls and trim, and clean up the site.

The next Women Build event is set for 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 12, at the Habitat ReStore at 107 Depot St. in Georgetown. The ReStore will host a Christmas Bazaar to benefit Women Build 2014; the bazaar will offer crafts, jewelry, collectibles, holiday decor, ReStore items and more.

From 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday, Dec. 13, Annabella’s Restaurant, 1201 Savannah Road in Lewes, will host a Dine and Donate Day; 15 percent of the entire day’s sales will be donated to Sussex Habitat Women Build. Reservations are suggested; there will be live music in the evening. Habitat reaches out to other women leaders and business owners in the county to come forward and sponsor a Build Day or an event in the upcoming year.

A Hard Hats, Heels and Hearts Gala will take place from 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 15 at Baywood Clubhouse. It will include a served dinner, open bar, live band, a complimentary photo for attending, live auction and a chance auction.
