Seashore Striders excel at cross country national meet
Twenty athletes from the Seashore Strider Youth Cross Country team took part in the National Cross Country Championships held Nov. 23 at Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky. The trip to the national championships was the 24th in a row for the Seashore Striders.
Leading the way was 11-year-old Blake Hundley, who placed seventh in his 3K race in a time of 10:43, while 8-year-old Luke Burton was ninth overall in 8:02 for the 2K course. Devin Hundley, 8, finished 16th in a personal best time of 8:50, while Lainey Shockro, 8, finished 19th in 8:58.
Sussex Tech freshman Ben Bamforth, 14, finished 22nd in the race in a personal best time of 13:50, while Meg Davidson was 25th overall in a season 5K best of 22:06 for the final youth All-American spot.
Other Seashore Striders finishers and their place among their age group are: 27th Tasha Taylor - 22:32; 32nd Logan Shuttleworth - 15:26; 26th Helena Helou - 11:48; 31st Jake Bamforth - 18:15; 32nd Emma Barthelmess - 11:58; 40th Natalie Guida - 13:33; 45th Brock Diaz - 11:28; 59th Lindsay Rambo - 12:34; 60th Jackson Dinger - 12:30; 64th Ethan Shuttleworth - 13:03 ; 69th Brooke Jones - 13:37; 76th Lindsey Guida - 13:08 ; 89th Emily Lamb - 13:34; 93rd Sky Dunmyer - 13:38.

Seashore Marathon update
With one week to go, a record number of participants from more than 45 states will toe the line for the sixth annual Rehoboth Seashore Marathon & Half-Marathon scheduled for 7 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 7. As of Nov. 27 at 8:14 a.m., the race closed at a record 2,300 participants, broken down as 1,356 in the half and 944 in the full marathon. Several local runners from Lewes and Rehoboth Beach are taking part in the event for their first time running the distance.
Numbers have increased following the Marine Corps and New York marathons, as runners either did not finish and are looking for another try or did not finish where they wanted and are looking to improve.
The marathon will include 11 volunteer groups doing 18 water stops during the event and handing out more than 35,000 cups of water and Gatorade over the 26.2-mile distance. Groups that are confirmed as of this week are the following: Delaware Swoop travel softball team, Odyssey of the Mind, Tri-Delaware, Cape Honor Society, Epworth Skate Project, Sussex Tech cross country, Cape Leo Club, MERR, Scout Troop 2540, Seashore Striders cross country and Cape softball team.
Spectators and family members of the marathon are reminded to use Kings Highway and Cape Henlopen Drive to travel through Lewes and remain off Gills Neck Road on the Lewes side of the Junction and Breakwater Trail. The goal is to keep traffic flowing on Gills Neck Road for the residents of Hawkseye, Wolfe Runne, and Wolfe Pointe during the event. Personnel from DelDOT, Delaware State Police, Lewes Fire Police, and Lewes Police Department have been hired by the event to patrol Gills Neck Road.
Pumpkin Pie 5K
Runners and walkers still interested in the Saturday, Nov. 30 post-Thanksgiving Huffin' for Pumpkin Pie 5K in Rehoboth Beach should show up early race morning as race-day registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m.
New this year because of the increase in numbers, there will be a packet pick-up on Friday from 3-5 p.m. at the Rehoboth Beach Running Company at 251 Rehoboth Ave.
As of Wednesday morning, a record 424 runners and walkers had registered for the event, while the event could take a shot at the new Grove Park record of 520 set at the recent Sea Witch 5K Classic. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in 16 age groups from 9 & under to 80 & over, while the top overall and top masters runners on both sides will also receive awards. Parking will be on Rehoboth Avenue on the east side of the circle. Burn off that pumpkin pie, and we will see you at the starting line.
