Jack Korbobo, retired groundskeeper

Jack (The Snowman) Korbobo, 87, of Long Neck, formerly of Allentown, Pa., passed away Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, of bone cancer.

Jack was born in Chicago, Ill. In 1930 the family moved to Phillipsburg, N.J. Jack enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and spent four years in the South Pacific during World War II. Later he worked for Mack Trucks in Allentown for 30 years.

While in Allentown, he studied sculpture for eight years under the tutelage of Richard Lieberman of the Baum School of Art, who created the prototype for the stature of the flag raising at Iwo Jima. Jack was a well-known artist and former member of the Millsboro Art League.

After his move to Delaware in 1986, he worked as a groundskeeper at King’s Creek Country Club in Rehoboth Beach. Later he did the same at Hunter’s Point in Millsboro. He was a 15-year member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 12-02. Before he retired in 2008, he served as a vessel examiner and a safe boating instructor. He was also a life member of American Legion Post 28 of Oak Orchard/Riverdale.

Jack was preceded in death by his mother, Julia Korbobo; father, John Korbobo; his stepmother, Eva Korbobo; and his stepsister, Cassandra Gill. He is survived by his wife Ruth Sokolowski of Long Neck; and his stepson, James Sokolowski of Niagara Falls, N.Y. Jack was a true animal lover and was predeceased by his beloved cat, Lilly. He continued to spoil his cats Tiger, Vagabond, and Sparkle. He fed the birds and squirrels every day. His family and his many friends and acquaintances will sorely miss his zest for life and his fun-loving personality.

An interment service with military honors will be held Monday, Dec. 16, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.
