Ladder safety tips offered by Old Towne Physical Therapy

December 14, 2013

The staff at Old Towne Physical Therapy, 34434 King Street Row, Lewes reminds everyone to keep ladder safety in mind during the holidays.

Follow these tips to ensure a safe season: Stay off the ladder when feeling dizzy or tired, or having problems with balance. Wear clean, slip-resistant shoes. Shoes with smooth leather soles are not good for ladder use as they are not sufficiently slip-resistant. When the ladder is set up for use, it should be placed on firm, level ground and without any type of slippery condition present at either the base or top support points.

Ladders should not be placed in front of closed doors that can open toward the ladder. The door should be blocked open, and locked, or guarded. Before using a ladder, inspect it to confirm it is in good working condition and make sure it's the right size for the job.

Only one person at a time should be on a ladder unless the ladder is specifically designed for more than one climber.

Never jump or slide down from a ladder or climb more than one rung or step at a time.
