Paul H. Smith Sr., retired police detective

Paul Henry Smith Sr., 83, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, in Lewes. Mr. Smith was born in Saranac Lake, N.Y. Sept. 28, 1930, son of the late Henry P. and Daisey (Emmons) Smith.

Mr. Smith was a Saranac Lake native, and a graduate of Saranac Lake High School. After high school Mr. Smith enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he proudly served his country. Mr. Smith earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland while working as an officer for the Montgomery County Police Department. He achieved the rank of detective with the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland, where he worked for 25 years until his retirement in 1982.

In 1987, Mr. Smith along with his family, moved to the Lewes area from Rockville, Md. He was a devout Catholic and worshiped at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Lewes. Mr. Smith enjoyed hunting in his earlier years, later fishing in the Delaware waters and spending time with his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Smith.

Mr. Smith was a long time member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Montgomery County Police Alumni Association, and the International Association for Identification.

In addition to his parents, Paul is preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth (Fabian) Smith; a son, Paul H. Jr. and his wife Diana L. Smith of Lewes; and a daughter Cynthia “Sunny” and her husband Gary Kiser of Rockville; four grandchildren: Michelle Owusu of Frederick, Md., John and Doug Kiser of Gaithersburg, Md. and Joshua “Sharkey” Smith of Lewes;  and two great-grandchildren Callie and Hailey Owusu.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Vitas Hospice Care, 100 Commerce Drive, Suite 302 Newark, DE 19713.

Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
