Stockings for Soldiers was a great success

January 7, 2014

The 2013 Stockings for Soldiers project has been successfully completed.  Two post office trailers were filled with 1,500 boxes weighing over 48,000 pounds and containing 12,000 individual stockings, stuffed with holiday greetings and treats.  Each stocking was delivered to one of our courageous troops serving in Afghanistan.

Sussex County residents contributed to this program with both cash contributions and stocking stuffers. This year, the Sussex Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, with April Willey coordinating,  adopted the program and collected four vans full of stocking stuffers.  Significant contributions were made by the members of the First Town Club, the Village Improvement Association, Henlopen Landing Residents, the Rehoboth Country Club Bridge Group, and many, many other groups and individuals who generously contributed.

On behalf of the program, we thank you all.  And, if our troops are still deployed next year (and we hope not!), we will look forward to making their holiday season a little more pleasant once again. It is a way to show that we care and support them.
