Apply by March 7 for Delaware Electric Co-op high school summer scholarships

College scholarship deadline set for Feb. 19
January 16, 2014

Delaware Electric Cooperative announces it will once again sponsor an all-expense-paid trip for three high school juniors to attend the June 15-19 National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. The tour will bring together more than 1,500 students representing 44 states. Participants will see all that Washington, D.C., has to offer while learning about the history of the United States and the electric co-op movement.

This is an opportunity for students to meet with Delaware’s congressional delegation on Capitol Hill and tour the city. To participate in this program, students must be high school juniors and their parent(s) or guardian(s) must receive their electric service from Delaware Electric Cooperative. Final selection for this year's Youth Tour will be made by a committee based upon an application, essay and personal interview. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 7.

To apply, go to www.delaware.coop/our-co-op/youth-tour. For more information, visit www.youthtour.coop. Contact Kevin Yingling via email at kevin@decoop.com or by phone at 302-349-3120 with any questions.

Delaware Electric Cooperative also offers scholarships to students through its parent cooperative. Any high school or homeschooled senior graduating in 2014 whose parents or guardians are consumer-members of Delaware Electric Cooperative and whose primary residence is served by the cooperative is eligible to apply now for the 2014 Electric Cooperative Educational Scholarship.

Scholarships will be awarded by the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives’ Educational Scholarship Foundation Board. An applicant must be entering his or her first semester at a college or technical/trade school in fall 2014. In 2014, the Educational Scholarship Foundation Board will award $1,000 scholarships which must be used for tuition, student fees, room and board or the purchase of books.

The board selects scholarship recipients based on a combination of weighted criteria, including financial need, academic achievement and a personal statement. For an application form and for detailed information on the eligibility requirements and application process, go to www.co-opliving.com/community/scholarship.htm or www.vmdaec.com. Applications are due by Wednesday, Feb. 19.

In 2013, the VMDAEC Educational Scholarship Foundation Board awarded 50 scholarships totaling $50,000 to deserving students throughout Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. Since its inception in 2000, 409 students have received VMDAEC scholarships totaling $308,500.
