Allan Levin honored as People's Choice winner of Prime Hook photo contest
The 2013 Prime Hook Nature Photography Contest featured some 250 photographs from nearly 70 photographers. At the conclusion of the annual exhibit Dec. 22, the People's Choice Winner was chosen. Allan Levin of Lewes won the honor for "Breakfast Time," his photo of a great blue heron reflected in the water.
The annual contest sponsored by the Friends of Prime Hook showcases some of the best and most talented nature photograpers on Delmarva. Next year's contest will open again in October. The contest is open to all nature photographers, both students and adults. It attracts hundreds of entries. Watch local media and the refuge website for news of next year's contest.
Judges for this year's contest were photographers Kevin Fleming, Taylor Crist and David Koster. Fleming also donated several of his award-winning photography books as prizes. Jerry am Ende of Wilmington won the Best in Show Award with his photograph of a belted kingfisher. It was one of several winning photos submitted by am Ende, who impressed judges with the quality of his work.
In the junior student category (age 12 and under), Sara Figurski swept the first-, second-, and third-place awards as well as winning two honorable mentions. In the senior student category, 13-year-old Jordyn Frieze duplicated the feat by winning first, second and third place with a pair of honorable mentions.
Special awards were also given to students, even though they did not win a judge's award. Special Friends Recognition Awards were presented for the many fine photographs submitted by Denay Cox, Garrett Biggs, Hykeem Evans, Evan Mruk and Marysol Gonzalez.
