I'm a resident of Angola By The Bay on Herring Creek near Lewes. I have written this little piece for our community newsletter, The Bayview. Our main road is Woodland Circle; I'm a runner, so "Stumpin' The Circle" is what I write. I just feel blessed to live in this place which is Angola By The Bay and in fact all of the Lewes and Rehoboth Beach area.

Hot chocolate! Just those words spark warmth. Those of us who spend winter on the Delmarva Peninsula, specifically along beautiful Herring Creek in Angola By The Bay, may find January and February a bit challenging. One thought is to use the conditions available to our advantage since we can't change them. On mornings like these what smells better than a big hot cup of cocoa while sitting by the fire or near the window at that special spot where the warm rays of sunlight glow through, providing a small tropical paradise just for you. Savor the moment. Hot chocolate? Well why not be creative.
You can start with regular cocoa powder, which does contain natural antioxidants, then add a little sugar, salt, vanilla and hot milk or use your favorite prepared powder mix. Then go for it. Just drop in a Hershey's Kiss, do not stir. You'll find rich melted heaven at the bottom of the cup. Another idea is to add a tall mountain of whipped cream on top, drizzle with nutmeg, then add thin lines of hone;, orange blossom is great. Now explore that chocolaty volcano right down to the bottom of the mug. You'll be dancin' on the ceiling wondering where winter went. I guess there are other things you can add to achieve the same effect. Try sprinkling multicolored jimmies on the whipped cream for a festive look.
If you're out and about and stop at one of those fast food places, go inside, buy their hot chocolate then go to the condiment bar and add two coffee creamers for a richer warming treat.
This time of year provides many beautiful sights to see right here in our own community. I sometimes take my hot cocoa along while stumping the circle in the snow in the warm golden glow of the early morning sun. I've seen deer and colorful birds such as cardinals, blue jays and wood peckers. I've seen several American Bald Eagles up close, hawks, and blue herons.
For a real treat, warm up your car, grab a big mug of hot chocolate and drive down to the waterfront and catch the sunrise on Herring Creek. Look east. The thin silvery ice will pick up all the shades of gold and pink of the morning sun and the blue of the sky.
