The Mariner boys, coached by former Cape star Terry Hazzard, played a game Jan. 15 coming off a loss for the first time in two seasons. Mariner had lost at Smyrna 37-32 Jan. 13. There was no evidence of any lingering weight as Hazzard ran 10 players onto the court from his deeply talented group to jump to a 14-2 first-quarter lead. One fan wondered aloud, "Who bests this team?"
Mariner cruised to a 58-38 victory and will host 8-0 Seaford Wednesday, Jan. 22.
The Mariner girls, coached by Cheryl Cannon and Melinda Price, got behind early and couldn't get all the way back, falling to Georgetown 27-19. Mariner dropped to 3-3 on the season.
