Cape swimmers stroke past Caesar Rodney to remain unbeaten

Vikings boys and girls win battle of unbeaten swim teams
January 17, 2014

The roar inside the humidor at the Sussex Family YMCA had that empty drum amplification effect as the Cape swimmers not in the pool ran to the far end to support Charlie Burton, who was crushed on the first two legs of the individual medley. Burton was into his strength, the breaststroke, and ate up the third 50 yards of the race to bring it home in 2:17 for a Cape victory.

The Jan. 14 boys' meet was a show up and showdown event, and the Vikings came through with a 90-80 victory while setting school records by Jack Weeks in the 100 butterfly, 55.18, and 100 backstroke, 55.90; and by Charlie Burton in the 100 breaststroke, 104.9.

A personal best was recorded by Dan Myers in the 200 freestyle, 2:02.6. Myers also swam a best in the 500 free but placed second.

John Dean, who anchored the winning 200 medley relay, also won the 50 freestyle with a personal best 24.77.

The boys recorded their 11th straight conference dual-meet win. The Cape senior class of swimmers is 28-1 in the conference and 35-2 overall over four years.

Caesar Rodney star junior Aaron Green won the 100 freestyle and anchored winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

An early showdown in the meet was sophomore Weeks versus Green in the 100 butterfly, which Weeks won in school record time, outtouching Green at the wall.
