United Way donates for utility and shelter assistance

United Way of Delaware has donated more than $38,500 so far through its statewide initiative Delaware Does More, a collaborative effort led by United Way of Delaware, supported by several organizations, businesses and the general community. United Way partnered with Delmarva Broadcasting in efforts to close the growing gap between supply and demand for utility assistance, shelter, and food for those in need throughout Delaware this winter.

Participating organizations funded thus far include First State Community Action Agency, Catholic Charities, Lutheran Community Services, Latin American Community Center, Sussex Community Crisis Housing, and the Salvation Army, with others to come.

Delaware Does More provides the opportunity to assist neighbors who are in desperate need in winter months.  Further, the global economic crisis continues to hit Delaware hard locally. A new class of working poor has emerged. These Delawareans rely on emergency assistance funds to make ends meet. The need is urgent, and the need is local.

All donations will be used to provide emergency shelter and heat for fellow Delawareans in need this winter. There is still time to help, as the program runs through March 1. There will be no administrative fee associated with donations to Delaware Does More. Every dollar will go directly to those who need the extra help this winter. This is separate from the traditional United Way of Delaware fundraising campaign for the community.
