Conservation Districts announce poster contest winners

January 25, 2014

The New Castle, Kent, and Sussex conservation districts recently sponsored a conservation poster contest. This year’s theme was Where Does Your Water Shed? A total of 105 posters were judged in the following grade categories: K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12.

First-, second-, and third-place winners in each grade category received a prize valued at $50, $25, and $15 respectively from the conservation districts in their home county.

Sussex County had a first-place winner in the grade 4-6 category in Dorothy McCormick.  McCormick's poster has been forwarded to the National Association of Conservation Districts for judging at the national level.

Second-place winners from Sussex County include Victoria Noon, fifth grade, Southern Delaware School of the Arts; Joshua Vonhof, eighth grade, Delmarva Christian High School; and Kay Dea’Winder, 10th grade, Delmarva Christian High School. Third-place winners from Sussex County are Rachel Kisner, ninth grade, Delmarva Christian High School; and Shawn McCullough, 10th grade, Delmarva Christian High School.

After judging by the local conservation districts, the first-place winners in each grade level were forwarded to the Delaware Association of Conservation District for judging at the state level. The state-level winners will receive cash awards from DACD.

The annual conservation poster contest provides students an opportunity to convey their thoughts about soil, water, and related natural resources through art.

The 2014 poster contest will be based on the theme The Secrets of Soil. More information and educational materials will be available at www.nacdnet.org under the Stewardship and Education page.
