A $58,000 grant will give fifth-graders in Milton and Rehoboth a chance to put their smarts to work.

Cape Henlopen received a state accelerated learning grant and will use the money to create a science, technology, engineering, art and math - STEAM -program for fifth-graders with good grades, said Donna Kolakowski, supervisor of elementary education for Cape Henlopen school district.

Cape fifth-graders will use Lego robotic kits and iPads to find solutions to real-world problems such as coastal erosion, she said.

“Legos would be used to create something to help them solve the problem,” she said.

Rehoboth and Milton elementary schools will pilot the program for fifth-graders who scored in the top 15 percent on the Delaware Comprehensive Assessment System tests, Kolakowski said.

“We're going to make sure we have the students who would be the most successful,” she said.

Kolakowski said the district is acquiring the materials needed to start the STEAM program; officials hope to begin classes in February.

Superintendent Robert Fulton said the grant is a great opportunity for students to apply what they learn.

“I think the future is really challenging kids,” he said.
