Harold H. Steiger, cartographic technician

Harold Alfred Steiger, 84, of Dagsboro, passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, in Lewes. He was born in Gallitzin, Pa. July 12, 1929, son of the late Charles and Irene (Cronauer) Steiger.

Mr. Steiger was a man of faith and a devout Catholic who was a parishioner of St. Ann Catholic Church in Bethany Beach and St. Camillus Church in Silver Spring, Md.. After honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1956, Mr. Steiger became a cartographic technician who created plaster molds for creating 3D relief maps designing. During the race to the moon in the 1960s, Mr. Steiger was involved in building models of the moon’s surface for the Apollo astronauts to practice their moon walks.

He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed listening to swing and big band music, participated at square dancing clubs and enjoyed tending to his garden. Mr. Steiger was a loving father, grandfather, brother and a dear friend who will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Steiger was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Genevieve (Nazit) Steiger; two brothers, Joseph and Gerald Steiger' and a sister, Mary Conard.

He is survived by his three sons: Gregory Steiger and his wife Amy Lueders of Reno, Nev., Kevin Steiger of Hedgesville, W.Va. and Brian Steiger of Olney, Md.; two daughters: Diane Steiger of Dagsboro and Susan Steiger of Atlanta, Ga.; seven grandchildren: Julia Steiger, Colleen Navia and her husband Alex, Joseph Steiger, Charles Steiger, Jeffrey Steiger, Matthew Steiger and Nathan Steiger; a brother, Richard Steiger of Red Lion, Pa.; and three sisters: Ruth Sandacz of Northville, Mich., June Nadolski of Lilly, Pa. and Jean Girard of Louisville, Ohio.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon, Friday, Jan. 24,  at St. Ann Catholic Church, 691 Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach, where friends may call beginning at 11 a.m. Interment with military honors will be at 2 p.m. at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Steiger's memory to The Muscular Dystrophy Association, 8501 LaSalle Road No. 106, Towson, MD 21286, or American Cancer Association, P.O. Box 163, Salisbury, MD 21803.

Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Clarksville Chapel, Ocean View.
