Art students apply their skills to promote upcoming Rehoboth Art League events

Hot Off the Press exhibit opens Feb. 7; Young at Art follows March 8
February 5, 2014

When college students Kacie Yakimowicz and Zoe Atsidis approached the Rehoboth Art League in November seeking internships while home on winter break, it seemed like a dream come true. They were assigned to assist with creating promotional materials for Hot Off the Press and Young at Art, the first two major exhibitions of 2014 at the Rehoboth Art League.

Yakimowicz and Atsidis were each given the details of the projects. Although both are from coastal Delaware, they did not know each other prior to this meeting. They quickly shared ideas and became a team to critique each other’s work and jointly come up with a social media plan.

Yakimowicz is a senior illustration major at Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. She designed the Hot Off the Press postcard depicting a printing press complete with hot chili peppers and a poster with trees rooted in books. Each is a fitting representation of this exciting first-time college and university student exhibition at the Rehoboth Art League. At month’s end, Yakimowicz will be departing for Hong Kong for a 10-week student exchange program.

Atsidis is majoring in visual communications at Delaware State University. She explains this major as graphic design with an advertising twist. She can still recall the pride she felt as an award winner when she was a participant in Young at Art. She is working on the postcard and poster for the exhibition, which will open Saturday, March 8.

The public is invited to the opening of Hot Off the Press from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 7. More than 20 students from Delaware State University, Salisbury University and Washington College will be represented. All types of media will be exhibited and for sale including painting, drawing, printmaking, digital arts, photography, graphic design, ceramics, and sculpture.

Hot Off The Press runs through March 2. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m., Sunday. The art league galleries are closed Mondays through March 31.

The Rehoboth Art League is a membership-based nonprofit arts organization dedicated to teaching, preserving and inspiring the arts in the region. For more information, go to rehobothartleague.org or call 302-227-8408.
